Somatic-informed counselling recognizes that our experiences are held not only in thoughts and emotions, but also within the body. Stress, trauma, and prolonged overwhelm can shape how the nervous system responds long after the original experience has passed.
This work gently supports awareness of physical sensations, patterns of tension or shutdown, and the body’s cues for safety and rest. Sessions are slow, collaborative, and choice-based. For some clients, somatic awareness may involve simply noticing breath, posture, or moments of activation during conversation, rather than engaging in structured exercises.
Somatic approaches may be supportive for individuals experiencing chronic stress, trauma responses, emotional overwhelm, or a sense of disconnection from their bodies. Participation is always optional, and the work is adapted to each individual’s comfort and readiness.
Mindfulness-based counselling focuses on developing present-moment awareness with curiosity and compassion. Rather than trying to control or eliminate thoughts and emotions, mindfulness supports noticing what is happening internally and responding with greater steadiness and clarity.
In counselling, mindfulness may be woven into conversation, reflection, or brief awareness practices. Formal meditation experience is not required. Some clients choose to engage in simple, structured practices, while others integrate mindfulness as a way of relating differently to thoughts, emotions, and stress as they arise.
Mindfulness-based work can be helpful for managing anxiety, emotional reactivity, rumination, and life transitions, and for cultivating a deeper sense of self-connection and resilience.
Somatic and mindfulness-based approaches are offered flexibly and collaboratively. They may be gently integrated into individual counselling sessions, explored as optional skill-building practices, or offered through future group sessions or workshops.
No single approach is required, and counselling remains responsive to each client’s preferences, goals, and capacity.
