Support for youth navigating emotional challenges, identity development, and life transitions.
Youth counselling offers adolescents a supportive, confidential space to explore their thoughts, emotions, and experiences during a time of significant growth and change.
At Stoic Soul Counselling, youth work is developmentally informed and individually tailored. Sessions are paced to the young person’s readiness and capacity, with an emphasis on building trust, emotional awareness, and a sense of safety.
Some youth prefer conversation-based sessions, while others benefit from more reflective, creative, or body-aware approaches. No single method is required, and approaches are adapted to each individual.
Youth come to counselling for many reasons — sometimes due to clearly identified concerns, and other times because changes in mood, behaviour, or functioning signal that additional support may be helpful.
Common themes include:
A diagnosis or crisis is not required to begin counselling.
Youth counselling services begin with parent or caregiver contact.
A complimentary consultation is offered to discuss concerns, explain the counselling process, review consent and confidentiality, and determine next steps. In many cases, this conversation provides sufficient clarity and support.
From there, a youth introductory session or additional parent consultation may be recommended when appropriate.
Parent and caregiver involvement is guided by ethical standards, the youth’s age and maturity, and clinical appropriateness.
Involvement may include:
Parent consultations are not required in all cases and are offered to support understanding, communication, and collaboration — while keeping the youth’s therapeutic space central.
Confidentiality and boundaries are discussed clearly at the outset to support trust for all involved.
Sessions are collaborative, respectful, and responsive. Depending on the youth’s needs and preferences, counselling may involve:
The focus is not on fixing or correcting behaviour, but on understanding what the behaviour is communicating and supporting healthy development.
You do not need to be certain that counselling is the right step in order to inquire.
An initial consultation provides space to discuss concerns, ask questions, and determine whether youth counselling is an appropriate fit. Referrals or alternative supports will be discussed if needed.
Youth counselling services are typically offered to adolescents approximately 13 years and older.
Parent or caregiver consent is required to begin services. Specific considerations around consent and involvement are discussed during the initial consultation to ensure ethical and appropriate care.
